United Methodist community House Impact Story

When Adam (name has been changed) started in the UMCH preschool classroom he had pretty intense emotional and behavioral issues. Adam had a difficult first few years with quite a bit of instability. He often struggled with intense emotions and physical behaviors when he didn’t get his way or when he had a conflict with another child.

With the guidance of his teachers, Adam began learning techniques to calm himself when he felt overcome with these strong feelings. He also was taught how to utilize the “Safe Space” located in a quiet, elevated area of the classroom where he can retreat for some alone time to calm down and regroup before returning to classroom activities. This area is furnished with pillows, plush toys, calming manipulative activities, and age-appropriate books about emotions.

We were thrilled to find a number of the materials we needed to equip this area at the Storehouse. We found a nice soft rug, pillows, and even a few fidget toys that help children calm down. We also found a stuffed animal that had different expressions which we used to teach Adam how to identify his feelings.

At first, he would need reminders to utilize the safe space but now he goes in there on his own a few times every day. His behavioral issues have improved and he is now able to self-regulate using the calming breathing techniques like “Pizza Breathing” and “Star Breathing” he has learned as part of the classroom curriculum. It is really amazing to see the changes that have occurred with Adam. He has internalized the skills he needs to manage his emotions which has also helped him with his social interactions. He plays with the other children now and is often seen smiling and laughing.

We are so thankful for the Storehouse, both our Child Development Center, as well as our Older Adult Program, found numerous products we could utilize. Most of the folks we serve come from low-income households so anything that helps us with our bottom line ultimately helps those we serve. Thank you so much!
